Anything in the news! / welfare lottery ban
« on: January 25, 2013, 01:59:27 PM »
Wouldn't some of you just love this?
In North Carolina, State Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam, a Republican from Wake, is looking to
introduce legislation that would ban welfare recipients from buy lottery tickets.

“We’re giving them welfare to help them live, and yet by selling them a ticket, we’re taking away their money that is there to provide them the barest of necessities."

Source: UPI

Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? Of course we all know the revenue from lottery sales would drop significantly.

On the other hand, buying lottery tickets is a sure way to get poor people to pay their fair share of "taxes."

Our Troops / Pentagon has Rose Parade float to honor veterans
« on: December 31, 2012, 10:12:48 PM »
The Pentagon will have a Rose Parade float.

Its main purpose will be to honor veterans from the Korean War.

The float will be a replica of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Covered in roses and other flowers, of course.

The Defense Department has never sponsored a float before.

Our Troops / Should females be allowed in ground combat
« on: November 27, 2012, 05:11:48 PM »
Four female war vets are suing, along with the ACLU, to get women into combat?
Is that a good thing?

I don't feel there is a need now, or has been, in the past for females in ground related combat.

Can they handle it? Sure. That's not the issue. The issue is that society, like it or not,
has treated females differently than adult males. Just like we you have heard that
women and children are saved first.

I don't think a civilized society has to push females into these combat roles if there
are plenty of men available.

Women do serve in a variety of ways in and around combat, so that's not much of an
issue either. It's all about foot soldiers, front line.

Travel America / Most stressful airports in the United States
« on: November 20, 2012, 02:51:10 PM »
According to Yahoo Travel
Here are the 10 worst stressful airports, with the first being worst and so on.

    Chicago O'Hare International Airport
    Los Angeles International Airport
    John F. Kennedy International Airport
    Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
    New York's LaGuardia Airport
    Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport
    Newark Liberty International Airport
    George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport
    San Francisco International Airport
    Miami International Airport

What makes a stressful airport? Stressful was related to business travelers.
Things that make an airport stressful are: confusing signs, poor service,
crowded or lacking enough restrooms, lousy wi-fi, and not enough places
to plug in.

What was the best airport? Dallas-Fort Worth as judged by that criteria.

According to the USDA, here are the guidelines if the power goes out.

Your refrigerator can safely keep food up to 4 hours if the door is closed.

Frozen food kept in the freezer will last 48 hours.

These times are guidelines and are for fully filled refrigerators.

The best way to have food on hand to eat during a power outage, is to have food that
does not need to be kept cold. Like canned and boxed goods.

Don't ever test food to see if it's still good by tasting it. Toss out food on the side of caution.

Stay safe!

Travel America / Alcatraz turns 100 years old this year
« on: October 14, 2012, 02:10:49 PM »
The island prison Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay, turns 100 years old this year.

Did you know you can visit it? The admission is actually free! The bad news is that
you must pay for a cruise to the island. A round trips is about $28.
Alcatraz Cruises for more info.

A little history of Alcatraz
In 1859, it became an Army fort. It was actually the largest fort west of the Mississippi River
at that time. During the Civil War, it housed Southern sympathizers and Civil War prisoners.
The Army style prison continued until The Spanish American War. In 1907, it officially became
a military prison, but closed in 1933. A year later, it opened as a federal prison. It closed in
1963. Some famous inmates over the years were Al Capone, Robert Stroud, known as "the Bird Man
of Alcatraz," and George Barnes, "Machine Gun Kelly." 36 prisoners tried to escape.  6 of
them were shot dead, 2 had drowned, and 5 disappeared, presumed dead. The other 23
were caught. In 1969, American Indians occupied it as a protest. 1973, the National Park
Service opened it up to tourists. In 1976, Clint Eastwood stars in The Enforcer, filmed some on Alcatraz.

Gardening / Things to do around your home for Fall
« on: September 23, 2012, 05:14:28 PM »
With Fall here, and colder temperatures already in some places, the season
is getting into full swing. Your yard and home need some things done
before winter is here. So, here is your Fall To-Do List:

Look around your house on the outside and inside. If you are done with
the garden hose, store it away. Check around your foundation. Look for
cracks and water damage. The slope away from the foundation needs to
be there so water does not do any damage.

Clean out those gutters. Water rot can ruin your roof and wood eaves real
quick. Instead of cleaning gutters, how about replacing them with a non-
clogging gutter? If not, clean your gutters!

You can probably leave the leaves on your lawn, but remove them from
from places where water can pool. Like around the foundation of your
house. You can put some of the leaves as mulch around bushes and shrubs.

Any season can get windy, but it seems that a cold wind does more damage,
maybe. You really need to trim your trees and remove dead branches.
Prevention here is worth a pound of cure. Falling tree limbs can damage
property, buildings, and power lines.

Speaking of power lines, you really need to check your power generator.
Test it and make sure it's ready to go. If you don't have one, get one!
Learn about generator safety here.

You also need to do annual winterizing tasks like storm windows, replace caulking, etc.
Make sure your furnace and fireplace are clean and ready as well.

Do not wait until cold, harsh weather to find out you have a problem.

Anything in the news! / Road Trip Preparedness
« on: August 28, 2012, 06:38:06 PM »
Labor Day Weekend is here, and many will be traveling by vehicle on
a road trip. Here are three things you should always have with you
in your car when going on a long trip.

Water - You never know when you will bet stranded or needing
water. You can do without food, but water is essential. Carry a
case of bottled water if you can. When you get home, use it
up and buy a new one for each road trip.

Maps -  the old fashioned kind made out of paper. Cell phones may
not work in certain areas. Having a road map to look at can be
crucial for finding where you are or how to get somewhere.
Don't rely on your smartphone or ipad.

Cash - some places may still insist on cash. Again, cell phones may
not work and you might need to use a pay phone. Keep a few dollars
in change, and perhaps $50 cash in small bills.

In fact, hurricane season is here as well, and those 3 things should
be at home as well.

Rants & Raves / Battery Maker that got tax dollars going Chinese
« on: August 12, 2012, 08:19:26 AM »
The battery maker A123 in Michigan is probably going to be taken over by a Chinese firm.

The battery maker has little cash to survive. However, they got $250 million dollars from the Obama administration in the form of a grant to help green energy.

We know how Solyndra worked out.

We should not be giving tax dollars to companies in the first place, especially when we try and pick winners.

This should make taxpayers even more angrier than with Solyndra. Your tax dollars helping to create a "Chinese" company.

Sure, their will be plenty of spin from you know where on this. But the bottom line is that tax payers lost a quarter of a billion dollars. It funded a company going Chinese.

Buy American / The Most "American Made Car" is a Toyota!
« on: July 29, 2012, 07:47:26 AM »
Yes indeed, the most American-Built vehicle is actually a Toyota.
A Toyota Camry, to be exact. Built in Georgetown, Ky.and Lafayette, Ind.
It has the highest content of American made parts than anything else.
It edges out the Ford F150 that has previously held the title.

In fact, 5 of the top 7 American made cars are Hondas or Toyotas
built right here in the USA.

Now, anyone want to comment on those tax dollars that still have
not been paid back that went to GM? Their best one came in at
#6, the Traverse.

Here's the top 5 American Made cars:
1. Toyota Camry
2. Ford F-150
3. Honda Accord
4. Toyota Sienna
5. Honda Pilot

All of those are Made in the USA, sold here. Reference: http://autos.yahoo.com/news/camry-edges-out-f-150-for--most-american-.html
